The 30-60 Day Window
Kuwait doesn't set one single hard date for when renewal can start โ but the practical, safe window is 30 to 60 days before your current iqama expires. Renewing too close to the expiry date risks the process not completing in time if there are any documentation issues, medical test delays, or processing backlogs.
Whose Job Is It to Start the Renewal?
Technically, this is your employer's (or their PRO's) legal responsibility โ not yours. Residency renewal is initiated via MOI eServices (eservices.moi.gov.kw) on your employer's side. That said, it's very much in your own interest to track your own expiry date and follow up with HR proactively rather than assuming it's being handled.
What Happens If Your Iqama Lapses?
- KD 10 per day fine for every day you overstay past expiry
- Potential travel ban until the situation is resolved
- Risk of deportation in more serious or prolonged cases
If you find yourself already overstaying, don't wait โ contact MOI or your employer's PRO immediately. Fines can sometimes be settled with a single payment if addressed promptly.

You can check your Civil ID and residency status directly through the Sahel app or PACI's online portal โ this is the fastest way to confirm your exact expiry date rather than relying on memory or an old physical sticker.

Changing jobs? If you're switching employers, your residency needs to be formally transferred (naqal kafala) via MOI eServices by your new employer โ this is a separate process from a standard renewal, and some transfers require your current employer's consent. Never leave your current employer without confirming the transfer is fully complete.
